Public defender is no friend to justice center [excerpt]

The Community Justice Center in the Tenderloin is transformed. This week the courtroom was standing-room only with defendants facing serious felony charges. Not only is the special court handling lots of cases - 498 in the first three weeks of this month - attendance is excellent.
It took five months, but the CJC is finally making progress.
Now where is Jeff Adachi? The public defender complained that defendants at the Tenderloin court never showed, and that the court was a waste of time and resources. But now that it is seeing results, Adachi's office is AWOL.
